It is necessary to go for colorectal cancer screening. Starting from the age of 45 everyone should get it done. People having some problems may have to start the screening earlier than the average. This method detects cancer and the problem can be treated if it is in the early stage. Proper screening at the right time can help to detect colon cancer at an early stage. Not only cancer, but coloscopy also detects the presence of polyps which may turn into cancer. The detection of polyp can prevent it from turning into the life threatening disease. Knowing about the process of coloscopy and the preparation, called bowel prep, can help people to get mentally and physically prepared for it.
Colonoscopy is the process in which the doctor is able to take a closer look at the colon and rectum. The doctor uses a hollow tube called a colonoscope which has a tiny camera at the end. This lighted tube is eased into the patient’s colon through rectum to take pictures and send it to a TV screen. Doctor can see if there is any polyp or cancerous growth. Small equipment can be inserted through the tube to remove polyp or to collect tissues.
This is one important step of coloscopy which is very different form gastric bypass. While the latter is used as a bariatric surgery, the former is a diagnosis of the colon and rectum. Bowel is simply the process of cleaning it as much as possible to help the doctor get clear pictures. Bowel prep includes a diet, medicines and lots of liquid laxative. Sometimes enemas are also prescribed and this one makes the patient visit bathroom a lot. Once the colon is clear, doctor can properly see clear pictures. Doctor may advise you to avoid taking some medicines one week prior to the screening.
It takes around 30 minutes to complete the procedure. Patients are usually given medicines to make them sleep during the process. Once the screening is done, the patient is released to go home. But it is advised not to drive as the effect of medicine takes time to wear off. It is better to be accompanied by an adult to the screening.
